William Lian Show navigation Hide navigation Home About Me Fun Facts Features Interests Places English 中文 I'm William Lian I'm a Seattle based software engineer, amateur photographer and enthusiastic hiker. Feel free to follow any of the below social profile link to know more about me, or, simply scroll down and take a look at my profile. Who Am I? William will bring balance to the Code. The Great Coding Prophet Born in the Chinese Forbidden City, I was raised as the last heir of the royal bloodline of the great Ch'ing Empire. At my early age I followed the Rebel who fought against the corrupting empire to their secret base in Canton province at the Outer Rim of the regime. At there I learned my family history and the power of "Examination" for some twenty years, as well as a dark secret of the Rebel-built new Republic. In order to resist the temptation from the dark side I moved to Hong Kong, one of the remaining free territory in the independent federation. There I discovered my special power of Coding inherited from my family and finally became a titled "Coder" after eight years training. In 2013 I was told by a vision of the great master of Code to start another training in Silicon Valley, where the first Coder Temple was established. After two years I was sent by the High Council to conduct a secret mission in a base of a rainy city named Seattle. I am still here to find my Path to Enlightenment. College Life Let Pizza and Iced Coffee tell you what to code next. William as a Student Apprentice Coder ? 2010 Life was never easy to became a Coder. So I learned to live a fun life by myself. I studied in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and I WAS NOT MAJORING IN CHINESE... or any kinds related to language. Well... technically the above is wrong. I do study languages such as C, C++ and Java. To finish up a network application project in MFC (you are old if you know what it is), I slept eight hours for a whole week. That is, 1.143 hours per day on average. I spent all the semester to date a girl so I have to finish my 50-page final-year project thesis in three straight days without any sleep. I registered a sketch course from the Fine Art faculty and got an A- although I had no idea what I was drawing The professor who taught us Computer Security once hacked into Google's mail service and got black listed by Google for several years I had my own course to teach CSS and Photoshop offered by my college. So technically I was hired by the university as a stuff at the same time as a tuition-paying student. Coffee is always the first item sold out in the vending machine next to the computer lab, always, regardless the taste, brand or price. Career Life May the Code be with you. Hong Kong Morgan Stanley ? 2010 - 2013 My first job application in my life, is for Microsoft. And I was ignored like... nothing. And now I lived two blocks away from Microsoft HQ. Anyways, Morgan Stanley is a fun place to spend you life in. If you were lucky, you might have a luxury day with eight hours outside the office. If you are interested in my Morgan Stanley life, you can check out my some ten-thousand "short" summary here. I was writing Perl for three years in the bank, a language some coder described as "a write-only language spoken by the dinosaurs". I was actually a web front-end developer if categorized by the major time spent. And my tech stack is no fancy Angular-JS, no jQuery, not even the good old PHP. No. I was developing Flex, a fancier twin of Flash the animator. Oh BTW, I also did a lot of Perl CGI (if you still know what that is). There was a big panel TV above the right of my desk and continuously playing Bloomberg channel. When I was boring, I stared at the TV and watch the never ending commercials. Whenever the boss checked in, I will just say "Oh, I was just thinking about a hard problem". For a period of time I was so fed up with the repeating commercials on Bloomberg. Interactive Broker, "one dollar per trade", you were playing ten times a day back then (and I hope you no longer do so). I changed three teams in three years. Every time the team lead left the company after I joined and before I transferred to another. To: my future bosses, don't worry the curse has been proved void - I left my previous company before my manager Bay Area Groupon ? 2013 - 2015 I swam across the Pacific late 2013 trying to find the guidance of the great master of Code. I landed at Groupon's Palo Alto office, surrounded by Google, Facebook, forever sunshine, Stanford and the Golden Gate Bridge. It is the Jerusalem of the Coder's religion. I paid my first meal, a taco, in Bay Area with a one hundred bill and the waiter responded me with "Welcome to the states" I never wore a sunglass for the whole time I was in California, but wearing now after I moved to Seattle Like all other travelers, I asked the taxi driver to take me to San "Drose" I cannot pronounce Yosemite properly, even now There will be two mandatory answers followed by my "I lived in Mountain View, worked at Groupon" self introduction: 1) "No, it's Groupon, not Google. The Groupon where you will find your restaurant deals." 2) "No, we don't have employee special deals, sorry." Seattle Groupon ? 2015 - 2016 I used to believe Seattle is a terrible place... and you ask me "how about now?" Uh, I still think so. It's a long story how I ended up here in Seattle, but anyways I am here enjoying the ever lasting rain and the super authentic coffee. I love the national parks so near the emerald city, as well as its friendly summer time. Before I came to Seattle, I had no idea where the Washington state is. I used to thought it is either the state where DC is in or some where in the east coast. In the first few months I moved here, I used to carry an umbrella wherever I went. I thought it was cool because in Hong Kong every one brings an umbrella on rainy days - until I was laughed at several time by Seattleites: "We never use an umbrella. That is for tourists and Californians." You probably heard of the famous "First Starbucks" in the Pike Place Market that is forever crowded and lined up several miles long. Well my visit is a little bit different. It was the first day I arrived Seattle and I was staying in a downtown hotel. As a coffee-based animal I searched around Starbucks (OK... honestly I don't know those nice local cafes yet at that time - I was then just a dumb "Californian") and found one on my way to the office which locates at some where on the Pike Place. It was 8am in a Monday morning so the street was empty and quite. I walked in with my sleepy eyes, grabbed a latte and just left. I didn't really notice anything except for the a little weird Starbucks logo. Only after two months when my friend visited and asked me to go to the first Starbucks I realized that was the one serving my "first coffee in Seattle". Seattle is such a great place for hikers - surrounded by three very different national parks all within three hours of drive....
